Thanks to Calmgrove for getting me to look at some art. Max Ernst was a Dada artist influenced by Hieronymous Bosch. I can see that influence in the palette, the figures, and the composition. Not to mention the surreal themes. Both painted scenes that can inspire nightmares.

Is Max-Ernest (in Pseudonymous Bosch’s Secret Series) the first Dada hero in children’s lit?
